It may seem like a self-defeating prophesy, but the truth of the matter is being overweight in childhood is a predictor of obesity in adulthood.  What is worse it can also lead to serious diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.  As well as an overall sense of unhappiness and the lack of mobility.

Many experts are promoting active lifestyles for kids.  The reason being, the sooner you start living an active, healthy lifestyle, the better.  Food choices, vitamin supplements, and exercise all come in to play, with parents at the forefront.

Start the day with a good breakfast.  It doesn’t have to be fancy.  A boiled egg, whole grain toast and some fruit will ensure their little bodies have the nutrients they need to get going.  A green drink or multi-vitamin are also good habits to develop. They may complain at first when you take away the “loopy fruit”  but in the long run they will thank you.  They will also learn to love the feeling of having the nutrients they need to concentrate in class and the energy to play happily throughout the day.

Next load your child’s lunch bag with vitamin rich healthy foods.  Include high quality protein, such as white chicken or turkey breast.  With whole grain breads, complex carbohydrates found in raw vegetables, and fruit.

Shop for healthful foods.  Make healthy food choices for you family at the supermarket.  Think about the nutritional value of what you purchase.  Leave things on the shelf when they contain artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.  If there is no junk food in the house your children won’t be tempted to eat them.  And of course neither will you.

That brings me to the next point, set the good example in healthy, nutritious eating and active living.  Be active and have fun doing it.  Have the children join in on the fun, even something as simple as jumping rope, or using a hula hoop can be a great way to get the blood circulating, build muscle and aid coordination

Let a healthy active lifestyle and a habit of vitamin rich, nutritious eating be what your children inherit from you.
